I am running for Mayor because I believe I can make a positive contribution to our City government.
LEADERSHIP
The position of Mayor is not simply about effectively running a meeting, although a thorough knowledge of parliamentary procedures is useful and the ability to maintain order imperative. It is about bringing people together and respecting opposing opinions. It is about healthy discussion and debate and it is about moving our City forward. The next Mayor must be willing to put in the time and energy to work with the city council and staff to build an effective leadership team.
EXPERIENCE
Since 1995 I have served on the Lucia Mar Unified School District Board of Education. As part of team Lucia Mar we passed two bonds, built three schools, and increased student performance dramatically. We also have oversight for a budget five times larger and a staff ten times bigger than the city of Pismo Beach. I am proud to say that I enjoy the support of the people that are most familiar with my work in the District: the Superintendent and the other members of the Board of Education who have elected me as Board President.
DOWNTOWN
I will be a voice in opposition to the “Manhattanization” of downtown Pismo Beach. I favor height limits and efforts to maintain the character of our tourism core. Part and parcel to maintaining this character is exercising close oversight of “mixed use” projects to prevent them from undermining the “commercial nature” of our downtown. The percentage of residential to commercial use should be limited.
DEVELOPMENT
Pismo Beach should be cautious when promoting annexations to the City. Development must be balanced with the needs of the current residents and available natural resources.
